Lexical Ambiguity in Sentence Proc- essing: Evidence from Chinese∗
نویسندگان
چکیده
Lexical ambiguity has been the focus for the study of context effects in word recognition in the past twenty-five years (Small, Cottrell, and Tanenhaus 1988, Onifer and Swinney 1981, Simpson and Krueger 1991, Swinney 1979, Tabossi 1988). Most of this literature has been concerned with the study of Indo-European languages, in particular, English. However, the phenomenon of lexical ambiguity is pervasive in almost all languages, and it surfaces particularly strongly in Chinese. Thus, the study of lexical ambiguity in the processing of East Asian languages is important, especially given that the previous findings in this domain are claimed to be relevant to fundamental problems of language processing. In this study, we set out to

The Influence of Syntactic Category and Semantic Constraints on Lexical Ambiguity Resolution: An Eye Movement Study of Processing Chinese Homographs*
The purpose of the present study is twofold: (1) To examine whether the syntactic category constraint can determine the semantic resolution of Chinese syntactic category ambiguous words; and (2) to investigate whether the syntactic category of alternative meanings of Chinese homographs can influence the subordinate bias effect (SBE) during lexical ambiguity resolution. In the present study, fou...
متن کاملExhaustive semantic activation for reading ambiguous verbs in Chinese sentences
Studies of lexical ambiguity resolution in sentential contexts have not sufficiently considered the relatedness among an ambiguous word’s meanings as a predicting factor for semantic activation. To better understand the relation between lexical access and discourse processing and the effect of semantic relatedness on lexical ambiguity resolution, a cross-modal lexical priming experiment focusin...
متن کاملThe two be's of English
This qualitative study investigates the uses of be in Contemporary English. Based on this study, one easy claim and one more difficult claim are proposed. The easy claim is that the traditional distinction between be as a lexical verb and be as an auxiliary is faulty. In particular, 'copular-be', traditionally considered to be a lexical verb, is in fact a prototypi...
متن کاملLexical Access during Sentence Comprehension (Re)Consideration of Context Effects
The effects of prior semantic context upon lexical access during sentence comprehension were examined in two experiments. In both studies, subjects comprehended auditorily presented sentences containing lexical ambiguities and simultaneously performed a lexical decision task upon visually presented letter strings. Lexical decisions for visual words related to each of the meanings of the ambigui...
متن کاملAccessing lexical ambiguities during sentence comprehension: Effects of frequency of meaning and contextual bias
Two hypotheses concerning the nature of lexical access, the exhaustive access and the terminating ordered search hypotheses, were examined in two separate studies using a cross modal lexical priming task. In this task, subjects listened to sentences that were biased toward either the primary interpretation (a meaning occurring 75% or more of the time) or a secondary interpretation (a meaning oc...
